How the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area Started
The Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area (MIA) began in 1912. This happened after the Burrinjuck Dam was built. The dam is located in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains. The main idea for the MIA was to use gravity to move water. This water came from the Murrumbidgee River near Yanco, New South Wales.
Growing the Water System
The water system grew even more in the 1970s. This was after the Snowy Mountains Scheme was finished. The Blowering Dam was also built around this time. These projects helped bring more water to the MIA.
Becoming a Private Company
In 1999, the MIA and its surrounding areas changed. They were no longer owned by the Government of New South Wales. Instead, they became a private company. This company is owned by its customers. These customers are the local farmers who use the irrigation water.
Important Water Storage
Murrumbidgee Irrigation also built the Roach’s Surge Reservoir. This reservoir is near Yanco. It can hold a huge amount of water, up to 5 million tonnes. This helps make sure there is enough water for everyone.
