The Snowy Mountains, also called "The Snowies", is a special area in southeastern Australia. It is the highest mountain range on the Australian mainland. This region is home to Mount Kosciuszko, which is Australia's tallest mountain, standing at 2,228 meters (7,310 feet) high. There are five peaks in the Snowy Mountains that are all taller than 2,100 meters (6,890 feet).
The Snowy Mountains are located in southern New South Wales. They are part of a larger group of mountains called the Australian Alps and the even bigger Great Dividing Range.

What Makes the Snowy Mountains Special?
Unlike most of Australia, the Snowy Mountains get a lot of natural snow every winter. The heaviest snowfalls usually happen in June, July, and early August. Most of this snow melts by late spring. The only other major alpine (snowy mountain) region in Australia is in the Tasmanian highlands.
Plants and Wildlife
One interesting plant found here is the mountain plum-pine. This is a type of conifer tree that grows close to the ground. It's adapted to the cold, snowy conditions.
Winter Fun and Skiing
During the winter months, the Snowy Mountains become a popular place for skiing and snowboarding. All four of New South Wales's main snow resorts are located in this region. People come from all over to enjoy the snow and mountain activities.
Getting Around the Snowies
The main roads that help people travel through the Snowy Mountains are the Alpine Way and the Snowy Mountains Highway. These roads allow visitors to explore the beautiful scenery and reach the ski resorts.
