The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey, also known as MARCO, is a super cool art museum in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. It's a big place where you can see amazing contemporary art. Contemporary art means art made in our time, usually from the 1960s or 1970s until now.

MARCO often has special shows featuring artists from Mexico and all over the world. The museum is located right in the center of Monterrey, close to a big public square called the Macroplaza.

Exploring MARCO's Design

MARCO was designed by a famous Mexican architect named Ricardo Legorreta. The building opened in 1991. It has a modern and simple style, which helps the art stand out.

The museum is huge! It covers an area of about 16,000 square meters (that's like 4 football fields!). Inside, there are 11 big rooms, called galleries, where the art is shown. These galleries have special lighting, using both natural sunlight and artificial lights, to make the artworks look their best.

What You'll Find Inside MARCO

Besides the art galleries, MARCO has other cool spots. There's an outdoor sculpture garden where you can see art under the sky. There's also a beautiful Central Patio with a water mirror fountain. It's a peaceful place to relax.

The museum also has an auditorium for events, a gift shop where you can buy souvenirs, and a restaurant if you get hungry.

The Giant Dove Sculpture

Right outside the museum, at the entrance, you'll see a very large bronze sculpture. It's a landmark for the museum! This sculpture is an abstract dove, and it's called "La Paloma" (which means "The Dove" in Spanish).

The artist who created it is Juan Soriano. This modern sculpture is super heavy, weighing 4 tons, and it stands about 18 feet tall! It's a great spot for a photo!

Discovering the Artworks

MARCO is home to many different types of art. You can see paintings, sculptures, and even installation art. Installation art is when artists create a whole experience or environment for you to walk through.

MARCO's Permanent Collection

The museum has its own collection of art that stays there all the time. Most of these artworks are by Latin American artists, especially from Mexico. But you can also find pieces by artists from Europe, the United States, and Canada.

Exciting Temporary Exhibitions

MARCO is famous for its temporary shows. These exhibitions change often, so there's always something new to see! Many famous Mexican artists have had their work shown here, like Frida Kahlo, Gabriel Orozco, and Julio Galán.

Artists from other countries have also displayed their amazing creations at MARCO. Some of these include Henry Moore, Ron Mueck, and Jenny Holzer. It's a great way to see art from all over the world!

#MuseoDeTodos Campaign

In 2019, MARCO started a special campaign called #MuseoDeTodos. This means "Museum for Everyone." The idea was to invite people from all backgrounds to visit the museum and enjoy the art. The campaign was very successful and even won an award for its creative design!
