About the Museum Building
The MARCO museum building was designed by a famous Mexican architect named Ricardo Legorreta. He created it in a Minimalist and modern style. The museum first opened its doors in 1991.
The building has special spaces where artworks are shown. These areas use a good mix of natural sunlight and artificial lights. This helps the art look its best.
The museum covers a large area, about 16,000 square meters (or 172,222 square feet). About 5,000 square meters (or 53,819 square feet) is used for art shows. There are 11 different rooms, called gallery halls, for exhibitions.
What You Can Find at MARCO
Outside the museum, there's a special garden area for sculptures. There's also a main courtyard with a water mirror fountain. The museum has an auditorium for events, a gift shop, and a restaurant.
The Giant Dove Sculpture
Right outside the museum, at the entrance, you'll see a very large bronze sculpture. It looks like an abstract dove. Its name is "La Paloma," which means "the dove" in Spanish.
This amazing sculpture was made by the artist Juan Soriano. It weighs 4 tons and stands about 18 feet (or 5.5 meters) tall. It's a famous landmark at the corner of Zuazua and Jardón streets.
Artworks and Exhibitions
The Museum's Own Collection
MARCO has its own collection of art. This includes paintings, sculptures, installations, and graphic artworks. Most of the art in this collection is Latin American art. It features works by artists from Mexico and other countries in Latin America.
There are also some artworks from artists in Europe, the United States, and Canada in the museum's permanent collection.
Special Art Shows
MARCO often hosts temporary art shows. Many Mexican artists have had their work shown here. Some famous names include Frida Kahlo, Gabriel Orozco, and Ricardo Legorreta.
Artists from other countries have also had their work displayed at MARCO. These include Isamu Noguchi, Henry Moore, and Ron Mueck.
#MuseoDeTodos Campaign
In 2019, MARCO started a special campaign called #MuseoDeTodos. This means "Museum for Everyone." The goal was to invite people from all backgrounds to visit the museum. They wanted everyone to enjoy the art on display. This campaign even won an award for its great advertisement design!
