Life and Work of Ricardo Legorreta
Ricardo Legorreta was born in Mexico City on May 7, 1931. He studied architecture at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. He finished his studies in 1953. After working with another architect, José Villagrán García, for ten years, he started his own architecture firm in 1963.
Legorreta's Unique Building Style
Legorreta learned a lot from another great architect, Luis Barragán. He took Barragán's ideas and used them in many different types of buildings. Barragán mostly designed homes, using bright colors, interesting light and shadow, and simple, strong shapes.
Legorreta used these same ideas in his designs. He brought bright colors, playful light, and solid, geometric shapes to buildings like hotels, factories, and schools. Some of his most famous buildings are the Camino Real Hotel in Mexico City, the IBM Factory in Guadalajara, and the Cathedral of Managua.
