The Museo de la Música Puertorriqueña (which means Museum of Puerto Rican Music in English) is a special place in Ponce, Puerto Rico. This museum shows how Puerto Rican music has grown over time. You can see musical instruments from the Taíno people, Spain, and Africa. These instruments were used in different music styles like the romantic danza and the lively bomba and plena. The museum also displays items from famous musicians and composers. It helps visitors understand the rich musical story of Puerto Rico.
The building where the museum is located is called Casa Serrallés. It used to be the home of Juan Eugenio Serrallés and his family. They owned a company called Destilería Serrallés, which made a well-known drink called Don Q. This house was their everyday home in downtown Ponce.

History of the Museum's Home
Early Plans for the Museum
In 1986, the government of Ponce bought a large house called Castillo Serrallés. They planned to turn it into the Museum of Puerto Rican Music. However, this idea was later changed.
First Location of the Museum
In 1991, the Museo de la Música Puertorriqueña first opened at 70 Cristina Street. This building is now known as the Centro Cultural de Ponce. A famous architect named Juan Bertoli Calderoni designed this beautiful pastel-colored building. It was built in a classic French style.
Moving to the Current Location
In 1996, the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña (ICP) moved the Music Museum to its current spot. This is at the corner of Isabel and Salud streets. The building was once the home of the Serrallés-Nevárez family. Félix Juan Serrallés, a successful local businessman, lived here. He was the grandson of Juan Serrallés, who started the Destilería Serrallés company. This house was their family's main home in the city. The backyard still has an outdoor bar area with the company's logo.
Exploring the Museum
About the Building and Exhibits
The Institute of Puerto Rican Culture restored the museum building in 1990. They wanted to honor Puerto Rican musicians in a special way. The building is easy to spot because it is a colorful, pastel-colored villa. This design was chosen to attract visitors. Inside, the museum's exhibits are shown in both Spanish and English. The museum is located at the southeast corner of Isabel and Salud streets.
What You Can See and Hear
The museum is designed to make a big impact on visitors. It helps them truly appreciate the unique music of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rican music is popular in other Caribbean islands. It is also played widely around the world, especially in the United States. The displays show how Puerto Rican music began and how it has changed over the years. You can see instruments like the güicharo or güiro, which is a hollowed-out gourd. There are also different types of Spanish guitar-like instruments, such as the requinto and bordonua.
Who Takes Care of the Museum
On September 15, 2004, the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico passed a law. This law stated that the ICP would continue to own the Museo de la Música property. However, the local government of Ponce became responsible for keeping the building safe, preserved, and maintained.
Honoring a Musician
In June 2012, the Senate of Puerto Rico approved a special resolution. This resolution was called Resolución Conjunta del Senado 957. It decided to rename the Museo de Música Puertorriqueña. It was renamed Museo de la Música Puertorriqueña Ruth Fernández to honor the famous singer.
