Discovering the Museum's History
How the Museum Started
The Museum of Montserrat began with something called the 'Biblical Museum'. A monk named Dom Bonaventura Ubach created this amazing collection. He lived in places like Jerusalem and Beirut for many years, starting in 1906.
Ancient Treasures and Modern Art
The oldest item you can see is an Egyptian sarcophagus. It is from the 13th century BC. The newest piece is a painting by Sean Scully from 2010. The sarcophagus is part of the Archaeology of the Biblical East Collection. This collection also has objects from ancient lands. These include Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, the Holy Land, and Cyprus.
Special Art Collections
The museum has a special display about the Virgin of Montserrat. It shows how artists have drawn her over many centuries. Since 2006, there is also a new section. It has about 160 Byzantine and Slavic icons. This collection is called Phos Hilaron, which means "joyful light." These icons are shown in a way that highlights light.
More Amazing Collections
- Goldsmithery: This collection has beautiful religious objects. They were made between the 15th and 20th centuries.
- Painting from the 13th to 18th Century: Here you can see works by famous artists. These include El Greco, Caravaggio, and Luca Giordano.
- 19th and 20th Century Painting: This section has one of the best collections of Catalan paintings. You will find art by Fortuny, Casas, Picasso, and Dalí.
- French Impressionist Art: This part shows paintings by Monet, Sisley, and Degas.
- Graphic Works: You can also see prints and drawings. Many great modern artists made these. Some names include Chagall, Miró, and Picasso.
Always Something New to See
The Museum of Montserrat is always changing. Only a small part of its collection is always on display. This means new temporary exhibitions are always happening. These shows are in the Pere Daura Room and the Pere Pruna Art Space. They add something special for visitors. In 2015, a Sean Scully art space opened nearby. It is at Santa Cecilia in Montserrat.
