Mustafa Suphi (1883 – 28 January 1921) was an important Turkish revolutionary and communist leader. He lived during a time when the Ottoman Empire was changing a lot. Suphi is famous for helping to create the Communist Party of Turkey. He worked to spread his ideas about how society should be organized.

Early Life and Education

Mustafa Suphi was born in 1883 in Giresun Province, which was part of the Ottoman Empire and is now in Turkey. He went to school in several cities, including Jerusalem, Damascus, and Erzurum. Later, he attended Galatasaray High School.

He then went to Paris to study political science. While there, he also wrote articles for a Turkish newspaper called Tanin. In 1910, he came back to Turkey and worked as an editor for the newspaper Ifham. He also taught classes about law and economics.

In 1913, he was accused of being involved in a political event and was sent away to Sinop for fifteen years. While in Sinop, he wrote articles about Western ideas for magazines. However, in 1914, he managed to escape and went to Russia. When First World War started, the Russian authorities considered him a prisoner and sent him to the Ural region.

Becoming a Communist Leader

In 1915, while in the Urals, Mustafa Suphi joined the Bolshevik Party. This was a political group in Russia that believed in a system called communism. In 1918, he helped organize a meeting in Moscow for Turkish left-wing groups. He also became involved in other political groups and was elected to a committee for Muslim workers in Russia.

Suphi started a newspaper called Yeni Dünya (New World) in Moscow in 1918. He used this newspaper to teach Turkish prisoners of war about the ideas of socialism. He also led the Turkish section of an important publicity office. In 1919, he attended a big international meeting of communist parties as a representative for Turkey.

At the first meeting of the Communist Party of Turkey, held in Baku on September 10, 1920, Suphi was chosen as its chairman. He then traveled to Anatolia in Turkey. He was one of 15 communists who went to Turkey to join the Turkish War of Independence.

His Death

After facing difficulties in Erzurum, Mustafa Suphi and his communist friends decided to return to Baku. However, they were sadly killed by a person named Sailor Yahya after they left Trabzon by boat on the night of January 28, 1921. It is thought that they were killed due to political tensions and disagreements.
