What's in a Name?
The name Muttama comes from an old word used by the local Aboriginal people. It means "like it" or "take it."
A Glimpse into Muttama's Past
Muttama has an interesting history, especially with gold mining and the railway.
Gold Rush Days
Mining started in the Muttama area in the 1860s. The town really grew when gold was found at a place called Muttama Reef in 1882. This discovery brought many people hoping to find their fortune.
Post Office History
To serve the growing community, a Post Office opened at Muttama Reef on February 1, 1876. It was later renamed Muttama in 1889. This Post Office helped people send and receive letters and packages for many years before it closed on October 12, 1979.
The Railway Connection
Muttama also had a railway station that was part of the Tumut branch line. Trains served the village from 1886 until 1975, when passenger services stopped. Unfortunately, all goods trains on the line were suspended after a big flood in 1984.
