History of Myers Flat
Myers Flat was started by the Myers family in the mid-1800s. They were among the first people to settle in this area. The family grew crops like apples, pears, sweet potatoes, and corn.
At first, the town was a stopping point for travelers. People would rest here on their way to San Francisco. A lumber mill called Morrison-Jackson mill also operated here for many years. It finally closed down in the mid-1980s. Today, the old mill site is part of Riverbend Cellars, where grapes are grown for wine.
A big flood in December 1964 caused a lot of damage to the town. Because Myers Flat is low and close to the Eel River, it still sometimes has problems with flooding. Many homes in the town are trailers or cabins. Some people have even built their houses to be able to handle floodwaters.
