From Quarry to Green Living Centre
For many years, Mynydd Llwyn-gwern was a busy place.
The Llwyngwern Slate Quarry
On the western side of the mountain, there was a slate quarry. A quarry is a place where people dig out rocks, like slate, from the ground. This quarry operated for a long time, starting in the 1820s. It finally closed down around 1950.
A New Beginning: The Centre for Alternative Technology
After the quarry closed, the site found a new purpose. In 1972, an exciting experiment began there. This experiment grew into what is now known as the Centre for Alternative Technology.
