Club History
How the Club Started
The city of Masjed Soleyman became very busy when oil was found there. Many workers moved to the city. The football team was created in 1965. It was first called F.C. Corona Masjed-Soleyman.
The team was made up of engineers from Iran, Britain, and Armenia. These engineers worked for the National Iranian Oil Company. In 1973, the team won its first trophy, the Khuzestan Provincial Cup. Before the Iranian Revolution, another team called Taj Masjed Soleyman was very popular. After the revolution, Taj was no longer active, and Naft became the most popular team in the city.
Climbing the Leagues
Naft Masjed Soleyman worked its way up through the football leagues. In 2010, they were promoted to the Azadegan League. This happened after they played a season in the Iran Football's 2nd Division.
The 2013–14 season was a great one for Naft Masjed Soleyman. They finished first in the Azadegan League. They won 12 games and had 7 draws. This success meant they were promoted to the Persian Gulf Pro League. Naft Masjed Soleyman became the first team from their city to play in Iran's top football league.
Playing in the Top League
Before the 2014–15 season began, the National Iranian Oil Company helped improve the Behnam Mohammadi Stadium. This made sure the stadium met the rules for the 2014–15 Persian Gulf Pro League. In their first game in the top league, Naft tied 0–0 against Saipa.
However, at the end of that season, Naft finished last in the league. This meant they were moved back down to the Azadegan League. But they didn't give up! In April 2018, Naft Masjed Soleyman made it back to the Persian Gulf Pro League. They did this by winning the Azadegan League championship.
