Club History
How the Club Started
Before 1972, two main football clubs were popular in Abadan: Kargar FC and Jam FC. Kargar FC was started by workers from the city's oil refinery. Later, in 1972, when the Takhte Jamshid League was created, Abadan got its own spot. This new club, Sanat Naft, was managed by Iran's oil industry. Their first team colors were white, blue, and black.
Football During Difficult Times
Football was very popular in Abadan. However, things changed when the Iranian Revolution happened in 1978. Football became less important. Then, the Iran–Iraq War started in 1980. Abadan was heavily affected by the war. The oil refinery closed, and many people left the city.
Because of the war, Sanat Naft had to move. From 1980 to 1988, the club played its games in Shiraz. They had to start from a lower division but worked hard to get back to the top league. After the war ended, the club returned to Abadan. However, the war had a lasting impact on the city and the club. Sanat Naft has faced challenges since then.
Playing in Iran's Top Leagues
Sanat Naft played in the Azadegan League for many years. They were promoted to the Iran Pro League in 2002 but went back down the same season.
In 2005, there was a big moment for the club. Sanat Naft was trying to get promoted to the top league. In the final game of the playoffs, they won their match. However, another team, Rah Ahan, also won by a very large score. This meant Rah Ahan finished ahead of Sanat Naft. Sanat Naft believed something was wrong with the other game. After a long process, it was found that Rah Ahan had used a player who wasn't allowed to play. Because of this, Sanat Naft was later given a promotion spot to the Persian Gulf Pro League for the 2007–08 season. Unfortunately, they were relegated again at the end of that season.
Returning to the Persian Gulf Pro League
After two years in the Azadegan League, Sanat Naft was promoted to the Iran Pro League again in 2010. They finished in ninth place in their first year back. The next year, they finished tenth. In the 2012–13 season, fans had high hopes, but the team finished 16th and was relegated once more.
After a few seasons in the lower division, Sanat Naft made a strong comeback. In the 2015–16 season, they won their last game 2–1 against Fajr Sepasi. This win helped them return to the top league after three years away.
