His Journey in Politics
Nahas Angula was born in a place called Onyaanya, in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia. For many years, from 1965 to 1989, he lived outside Namibia. During this time, he worked for Radio Zambia and then for the United Nations. In 1980, he became an organizer for the SWAPO party. This meant he helped plan and manage activities for the party.
In 1989, he was in charge of helping people register to vote for SWAPO. Just before Namibia became an independent country, Mr. Angula was part of the Constituent Assembly of Namibia. This was a special group that helped create the first laws for the new nation.
Important Roles in Government
In 1990, Nahas Angula became a member of the National Assembly of Namibia. This is like the parliament where laws are made. He served as the Minister of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport from 1990 to 1995. In this role, he was in charge of schools, cultural activities, youth programs, and sports.
From 1995 to 2005, he was the Minister of Higher Education. This job meant he looked after universities and other advanced learning institutions.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 2004, Nahas Angula was one of three people who wanted to be chosen as SWAPO's candidate for president. Even though he didn't win the nomination, the person who did win, Hifikepunye Pohamba, became president.
On March 21, 2005, when Mr. Pohamba became president, he chose Nahas Angula to be the Prime Minister of Namibia. The Prime Minister is the head of the government's daily activities. He held this important position until 2012.
In December 2012, President Pohamba changed some of the ministers in his government. This is called a cabinet reshuffle. Hage Geingob became the new Prime Minister, and Nahas Angula was then appointed as the Minister of Defence. In this role, he was responsible for the country's military and security.
Mr. Angula decided not to run for a seat in the National Assembly in the 2014 election. This meant he chose not to be a member of parliament anymore.
Education and Personal Life
Nahas Angula studied at university and earned a master's degree in education from Columbia University in 1978. He was working on an even higher degree, a Ph.D., but SWAPO asked him to return to Namibia to become the Minister of Education.
He is a member of the Lutheran church, a faith that has been part of his family for many generations.
