Early Life and Education
Naimatullah Khan studied at Punjab University and Karachi University. He earned degrees in journalism and law. After his studies, he worked as a lawyer. He also led Alkhidmat Foundation, which is a very large non-governmental organization (NGO) in Pakistan. NGOs are groups that help people and communities. In 2005, while he was Mayor of Karachi, he was even chosen as one of the "Top-20 Mayors of the World." This showed he was doing a great job!
Serving as Mayor of Karachi
Naimatullah Khan was the first Mayor of Karachi after a new plan was put in place by President Pervez Musharraf. This plan changed how cities were governed in Pakistan. He was elected as the City Mayor in 2001.
Improving Karachi's Infrastructure
As Mayor, Naimatullah Khan worked hard to improve Karachi. He managed to get a lot of money, about 2900 Million Pakistani Rupees, to rebuild parts of the city. The city council approved many projects under his leadership. These included building 18 flyovers (bridges over roads) and six underpasses (tunnels under roads). He also started two signal-free roads, which helped traffic move more smoothly. A big project was also a new water supply system for the people of Karachi.
Working Together for Development
It was a special time for Karachi because, for the first time, all the different groups in the city worked together on development projects. The plan for Karachi included making main roads signal-free, building many flyovers and underpasses, and replacing old water and sewer pipes. One of his ideas was the Green Line Bus Project for Karachi. For this project, he brought in new buses from Sweden to help people travel around the city.
Beach Safety Initiative
Naimatullah Khan also had a great idea to make Karachi's beaches safer. He hired young men from villages near the Arabian Sea coast. These local boys knew the sea well and were good swimmers. They worked as lifeguards to help protect visitors who came to swim at the beach. This was very helpful for people enjoying the coast.
End of Term
Naimatullah Khan resigned from his position in June 2005. He did not run for re-election in the next local city elections in 2005.
Later Life and Passing
Naimatullah Khan passed away on February 25, 2020. He was 89 years old and died in Karachi, Pakistan.
