Namur, Wisconsin (/næˈmʊər/ NAM-oor) is a small, unincorporated community located in Door County, Wisconsin. An "unincorporated community" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town with its own local government. Namur is found within the larger "town" of Union. It's known for its history, especially its connection to Belgian-American culture. You can find Namur on County Road DK, which used to be part of Wisconsin Highway 57. It's also part of the Namur Historic District, which includes many old farms nearby.

History

How Namur Got Its Name

The area now known as Namur started with a different name in the mid-1800s: Delwiche. This name came from the Guillaume Delwiche family, who hosted church services in their home before a proper church was built.

Building the First Church

A very important building for the community was the Our Lady of the Snows Catholic church. It was built in 1860. This was the first church constructed in the entire surrounding area, showing how important faith was to the early settlers.

Changing Names Over Time

Later, between 1880 and 1905, the community's name changed to Namur. This name was used for the local post office, which was run by Clement Geniesse. After that, when Fairland School was built, the community became known as Fairland.

Returning to Namur

In 1962, a group called the National Belgian Village committee asked the Wisconsin Highway Commission to change the community's name back to Namur. This request was approved, and the community has been known as Namur ever since. It helps celebrate the area's Belgian heritage.
