Nancy Barbara Bond was born on January 8, 1945. She is an American author who writes books for children. Her first book, A String in the Harp, came out in 1977. It is a fantasy story with old folk tales mixed in. The book takes place in West Wales. This novel won a special award called the Newbery Honor. It also received the Welsh Tir na n-Og Award. Many people still read it today.
Nancy Bond's Early Life and Education
Nancy Barbara Bond was born in Bethesda, Maryland. She grew up near Concord, Massachusetts. When she was eight years old, her family lived in London for a year. Her father was there on a special scholarship.
Nancy finished high school in Concord. Then, she went to Mount Holyoke College. In 1966, she earned her degree in English literature. Later, in 1972, she studied at the College of Librarianship in Aberystwyth, Wales.
Nancy Bond's Career and Interests
Nancy Bond has always loved three main things. These are nature, books (especially children's books), and Britain.
She worked for a publishing company called Houghton Mifflin in Boston. This was from 1966 to 1967. After that, she spent two years in London. She worked for Oxford University Press.
From 1969 to 1971, Nancy was an assistant librarian. She worked at the public library in Lincoln, Massachusetts. When she came back from Wales, she started writing her first book. She set this story in Wales. In 1973, she became the head librarian in Gardner, Massachusetts.
Her children's book, A String in the Harp, was published in 1976. The story mostly happens in Borth, Wales. This is near where Nancy went to college. The book is about an American family. They spend a year in Wales after their mother passes away. Nancy once said that her stories are always connected to a place. The setting is very important to the book's plot.
Nancy also worked for the Massachusetts Audubon Society. This was from 1976 to 1977. Her second book, The Best of Enemies, came out in 1978. From 1979 to 2001, Nancy taught at a special center. It was the Simmons College Center for the Study of Children's Literature. Since then, she has worked as a bookseller. She also continues to write books in Concord.
