In 2020, the city had a population of 509 people. This was an increase from 405 people counted in 2010, showing the community is growing.

Where is Napaskiak Located?
Napaskiak is found at coordinates 60.706929 degrees North and 161.760961 degrees West. The city covers a total area of about 3.8 square miles (9.8 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 3.5 square miles (9.1 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.3 square miles (0.8 square kilometers), is water.

Napaskiak first appeared in U.S. records in 1880. Back then, it was called "Napaskiagamute" and was an Inuit village. All 196 people living there were Inuit. In 1890, it was called "Napaskeagamiut," and again, all residents were native.
The town's name changed a few times over the years. It was called "Napaskiak" in 1940. Then, in the 1950s and 1960s, it was known as "Napaiskak." Finally, in 1970, the name went back to Napaskiak. The city officially became incorporated in 1971.
In 2000, there were 390 people living in Napaskiak. Most of the people, about 97.44%, were Native American. The average household had about 4.76 people. Many households, 56.1%, had children under 18 living with them. The median age in the city was 22 years old, meaning it's a very young community.
Education in Napaskiak
The Lower Kuskokwim School District runs the local school, called Zacharias John Williams Memorial School. This school teaches students from Pre-Kindergarten all the way to 12th grade.
As of 2018, the school had 155 students. A large number of these students, about 90%, were learning English as a second language. This is because most students are of Central Yupik Eskimo background. In fact, 85% of students were part of free or reduced lunch programs. Only two students that year were not Yupik.
The school had 34 employees in 2018, including 16 teachers. Four of these employees were native Alaskans. The current school building opened in October 2016, providing a modern learning space for the community. The original school building had opened in 1982.
