History of Nashville

Nashville, Georgia (circa 1905)

Nashville was started around 1840. In 1856, it became the official county seat for the new Berrien County. The town was officially recognized in 1892 and became a city in 1900.

There's a bit of a mystery about how Nashville got its name. Some people think it was named after Francis Nash, a brave officer from the American Revolutionary War. However, many old articles from the local newspaper, The Berrien Press, suggest a different story.

An article from 2006 in The Berrien Press talked about this naming puzzle. It mentioned old writings from the 1930s called The Griffin Papers. It also pointed to several articles from The Nashville Herald newspaper, published between 1909 and 1953. These articles, along with special plates made for Berrien County's 100th birthday in 1956, all say that Nashville was named after Simon W. Nash. He was a local person who lived in the area during the 1850s and 1860s.
