History of Nashville
Nashville was started around 1840. In 1856, it became the county seat for the new Berrien County. This means it was chosen as the main town where the county's government would be.
The town officially became a town in 1892 and then a city in 1900. There's a bit of a mystery about how Nashville got its name! Some people think it was named after Francis Nash, a soldier from the American Revolutionary War.
However, many old articles from the local newspaper, The Berrien Press, suggest something different. These articles, some from as far back as the 1900s, say the city was named after Simon W. Nash. He was a local person who lived in the area in the 1850s and 1860s. Even special plates made for Berrien County's 100th birthday in 1956 agree with this idea!
