Nasry Juan Asfura Zablah, known to many as Tito Asfura, is a Honduran politician and a successful businessman in the construction industry. Born on June 8, 1958, he became the President of Honduras on January 27, 2026. He is a member of the National Party of Honduras (PNH). Before becoming president, he served as the mayor of Tegucigalpa, the capital city, from 2014 to 2022. He also served as a representative in the National Congress of Honduras for the Francisco Morazán department from 2010 to 2014. Asfura ran for president in the 2021 election but was not elected. He later became the president of the National Party. In the 2025 presidential election, he ran again and won, becoming the country's leader.

Early Life and Education

Nasry Juan Asfura Zablah was born in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, on June 8, 1958. His parents were Nasry Juan Asfura and Gloria Zablah de Asfura. His family affectionately called him "Tito." His grandparents came to Honduras from Bethlehem as Christian Palestinian immigrants. His paternal grandparents arrived in the late 1890s, and his maternal grandparents in 1918.

Asfura finished high school at the San Francisco Institute. He started studying civil engineering at the National Autonomous University of Honduras. However, he decided to leave his studies to focus on a career in the construction business.

Early Political Steps

Asfura first became involved in public service in the 1990s. From 1990 to 1994, he worked as a municipal tax assistant in Tegucigalpa. He also assisted Mayor Nora Gúnera de Melgar. Later, he was part of the teams for mayors César Castellanos Madrid and Vilma Reyes.

In 2005, Asfura sought to become a candidate for mayor of the Central District. He ran in the National Party's internal elections but was defeated by Ricardo Álvarez. During that campaign, he famously said, "Papi a la orden!" (Daddy at your service!). This phrase became a popular nickname for him. After Álvarez won the general election, Asfura served as a councilman in his administration.

In the 2009 general election, Asfura was elected to the National Congress of Honduras. He represented the Francisco Morazán area. He served in Congress from 2010 to 2014.

After his time in Congress, Asfura became the mayor of Tegucigalpa. He was known for his many projects to improve roads and other city structures. He served as mayor until 2022. In May 2025, Asfura became the president of the National Party, taking over from David Chávez.

Presidential Campaigns

The 2021 Election

Asfura was chosen as the National Party's candidate for the 2021 presidential election. He won his party's primary election against Mauricio Oliva. In the main election, he ran against Xiomara Castro, who was the leader of the LIBRE party. Asfura focused his campaign on improving the country's infrastructure and creating more jobs. He also promised to support businesses, healthcare, education, and manufacturing. However, Xiomara Castro won that election.

The 2025 Election

Asfura was again nominated by the National Party to run for president in the 2025 election. He won the party's primary election against Ana García Carías. During his campaign, Asfura received support from international leaders. These included former U.S. President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei. Asfura also spent time in Washington, D.C., to show his alignment with certain foreign policies. He promised to bring "development and opportunities for everyone." He also pledged to "facilitate foreign and domestic investment" and "generate employment for all."

Asfura won the 2025 election with 40.3% of the votes. After the election, some candidates, like Salvador Nasralla and Rixi Moncada, raised questions about the vote counting process. Asfura became the candidate with the most votes in the history of the National Party. Under his leadership, the National Party also won the most seats in the National Congress, securing 49 seats.

On December 26, 2025, María Antonieta Mejía, one of Asfura's elected vice presidents, announced his inauguration plans. Asfura decided to have his presidential inauguration ceremony in the National Congress. This was different from the usual tradition of holding it at the National Stadium. He wanted a "symbolic and simple" event to avoid a large budget.

On January 21, 2026, Asfura and his three vice presidents received their official credentials. These documents confirmed their elected positions from the National Electoral Council.

Nasry Asfura was sworn in as President on January 27, 2026, in the National Congress. He is the oldest president to take office in Honduras. No foreign leaders were invited to the ceremony, and the outgoing President Xiomara Castro did not attend.

Personal Life

Asfura married Lissette del Cid in 1985. Together, they have three daughters.
