Natalie Tran, also known as communitychannel online, is an Australian YouTuber, actress, comedian, and writer. She was born on July 24, 1986. She is famous on YouTube for her funny videos about everyday life.

Natalie started making YouTube videos in 2006 while studying at the University of New South Wales. From 2006 to 2016, her channel mostly featured comedy videos where she talked about things she observed. For many years, she was the most popular YouTuber in Australia. She was also one of the highest-earning YouTubers worldwide in the late 2000s and early 2010s. She stopped regularly uploading videos to YouTube in late 2016.

Natalie has also had a successful acting career. She appeared in the movie Goddess (2013). She also had roles in TV shows like The Slot (2017–2018) and Mr Inbetween (2018–2021). In 2023, she became a host for The Great Australian Bake Off.

Early Life and Education

Natalie Tran was born on July 24, 1986, in Auburn, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. Her parents came to Australia from Vietnam in 1981 as refugees. Her mother was a lawyer, and her father was a literary lecturer in Vietnam. Natalie has an older sister named Isabel.

Natalie often says that her parents "fled Vietnam with nothing but the clothes on their backs." After they settled in Sydney, her mother worked for the postal service. Her father became a public school teacher. Natalie believes her parents' hard work made her success possible.

Natalie grew up in Auburn and went to primary school in Lidcombe. She then attended Rosebank College before moving to Meriden School in Year 9. Meriden School is an all-girls school where she finished in 2004. She has said she "wasn't really a fan" of high school.

After high school, she went to the University of New South Wales. She first studied education, inspired by her father. However, after her YouTube channel became popular, she changed her major. She later earned a degree in Digital Media. While at university, she also worked in retail stores.

YouTube Career

Natalie posted her first video on YouTube on September 25, 2006. At first, she made videos responding to others she had seen online. Later, her content changed to funny skits and vlogs about everyday life. In these videos, she played all the characters herself and often talked directly to the camera.

In 2007, Natalie was invited to help launch YouTube Australia. An Australian TV show, A Current Affair, even featured one of her videos in 2007. In 2009, she was nominated for two awards at Mashable's Open Web Awards. These were for Best YouTube Channel or Personality and Funniest YouTube Channel.

In 2010, Natalie worked with Lonely Planet to create travel videos. She shared her adventures in cities like Paris, New York City, and Buenos Aires.

By 2009, Natalie was the most subscribed-to YouTuber in Australia. She was also the 37th most subscribed-to globally. In 2010, she became the 18th most subscribed-to YouTuber worldwide. She was also one of the highest-earning YouTubers. By 2011, she had over one million subscribers.

In 2013, she started a series called Love Conundrums on her channel, offering relationship advice. She later stopped this series. Natalie also spoke at YouTube FanFest Australia in 2015. In April 2015, she gave a talk at Brown University about how Asian people are shown in the media. In December 2015, she appeared in a video for Lilly Singh's #GirlLove campaign. From 2010 to 2011, Natalie worked as a correspondent for The Project. She made her first movie appearance in the 2013 romantic comedy Goddess.

From 2017 to 2018, she was a regular on the sketch comedy show The Slot. She also appeared in all three seasons of the FX series Mr Inbetween. In this show, she played Jacinta, the ex-wife of the main character, Ray. Natalie was a guest in the first episode of the sketch comedy series Kinne Tonight in August 2018. She returned to the show as a recurring guest in its second season in 2020.

In 2021, Natalie was a correspondent and writer for The Weekly with Charlie Pickering. She made a guest appearance on the Netflix series Heartbreak High in 2022. She also had voice roles in the animated sitcom Koala Man as Lulu Liu and Kevin's neighbour.

In June 2023, Natalie began co-hosting the cooking competition show The Great Australian Bake Off. She hosts it with comedian Cal Wilson. They replaced the show's previous hosts, Claire Hooper and Mel Buttle.

Personal Life

Natalie became a vegetarian in 2015, and later became a vegan. In 2011, she started dating Rowan Jones, a producer she met while working on The Project. As of 2015, they work together as freelance videographers. Natalie is an atheist.

After not posting any videos since December 2016, Natalie shared in 2019 that she had stopped posting due to anxiety.
