Playing in the NFL
Pittsburgh Steelers Years
The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Nate Washington in 2005. He was the first player from Tiffin University to play in the NFL in the modern era. His first catch in a game was in the 2005 AFC Championship Game. This game was against the Denver Broncos.
In 2006, he often played as the Steelers' slot receiver. He also started two games when other players were injured. In Super Bowl XLIII, Washington had one catch for 11 yards. This helped him win his second Super Bowl ring.
Tennessee Titans Years
Nate Washington joined the Tennessee Titans in 2009. He signed a six-year deal with the team.
In the 2011 season, the Titans' main receiver, Kenny Britt, got injured. This made Washington the team's top receiver. He had his best year with 74 catches, 1,023 yards, and 7 touchdowns. The Titans finished the season with 9 wins and 7 losses.
The 2012 season was tough for the Titans' offense. Their quarterback, Jake Locker, had a shoulder injury. Their running back, Chris Johnson, started slowly. Washington still led the team with 746 receiving yards and 4 touchdowns. He even had a 71-yard touchdown catch from Locker.
For the 2013 season, Washington was chosen as a team captain. In a game against the San Diego Chargers, he became Locker's favorite target. The Titans were losing, but Washington helped rally the team. He reportedly used ideas from the movie 300 to inspire his teammates. With only two minutes left, Washington helped the team move the ball 94 yards. This led to a touchdown pass with just 15 seconds left. The Titans won the game 20–17. Washington had eight catches for 131 yards in that game. For the whole season, he had 58 catches for 919 yards and three touchdowns.
By the end of the 2013 season, Washington was one of the top undrafted NFL players. He ranked third in career receiving yards among all undrafted players. Only Wes Welker and Antonio Gates had more. He also played in 128 games in a row, which was the most among all NFL wide receivers at that time.
In 2014, Washington caught an 80-yard touchdown pass. This was from quarterback Zach Mettenberger against his old team, the Steelers.
Houston Texans and New England Patriots
Washington signed with the Houston Texans in 2015 for one year. He then signed with the New England Patriots in 2016. However, the Patriots released him before the season started.
