From England to the New World
Nathaniel Richards was born in England in 1604. When he was about 28 years old, he decided to move to the New World. In 1632, he sailed across the ocean on a ship called the Lyon. He first arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
Settling in New Colonies
Nathaniel first settled in Cambridge in 1633. A few years later, in 1636, he moved to Hartford. He traveled with a group led by Thomas Hooker. About one hundred people made this journey with them. In Hartford, his home was near a small river called the Little River.
Serving the Community in Hartford
Nathaniel Richards took on important roles in Hartford. He worked as a constable in 1642 and again in 1650. A constable was like a police officer, helping to keep order in the town. He also served as a townsman in 1645. A townsman was a person who helped manage the town's affairs.
Founding Norwalk and Public Service
In 1650, Nathaniel Richards was one of the people who signed an agreement to start a new town called Norwalk. He moved there in the same year. He continued his public service in Norwalk. In 1658, he became a deputy of the General Court. This meant he was chosen to represent Norwalk in the colony's government. He also served as a selectman in 1670. A selectman was a local official who helped run the town.
Honored as a Founder
Nathaniel Richards is remembered as a founder of both Hartford and Norwalk. His name is listed on the Founders Stone in the Ancient Burying Ground in Hartford. This stone honors the people who first settled Hartford. He is also listed on the Founders Stone in the East Norwalk Historical Cemetery. This stone honors the people who founded Norwalk.
