The National Assembly (which means Assemblée nationale in French) is the main law-making body of Senegal. It's like the parliament where elected representatives work. For a while, from 1999 to 2001 and again from 2007 to 2012, Senegal had two law-making houses. The National Assembly was one, and the Senate was the other. However, the Senate was removed in September 2012, making the National Assembly the only one. This type of system, with only one main law-making house, is called unicameral.

Senegal's National Assembly Today

The current National Assembly was formed after elections in July 2022. It has 165 members who are chosen by the people. These members serve for five years, helping to make important decisions for the country.

How Members Are Elected

The way members are elected is a bit special. It's a mix of two systems.

  • First, 90 members are elected from different areas (called departments). In these areas, the party that gets the most votes wins all the seats.
  • Second, 60 seats are given out based on how many votes each party gets across the whole country. This makes sure smaller parties can also have a voice.
  • There are also 15 special seats for Senegalese citizens who live outside the country.

When people vote, they choose a party list, and this single vote counts for both parts of the election system.

A Look at Past Elections

Senegal has held many elections over the years to choose members for its National Assembly. These elections help shape the country's future. Some important past elections include:

  • 2001 Senegalese parliamentary election
  • 2007 Senegalese parliamentary election
  • 2012 Senegalese parliamentary election
  • 2017 Senegalese parliamentary election

Leaders of the National Assembly

The National Assembly has a leader, called the President of the National Assembly. This person helps guide the discussions and work of the members. You can find a full list of these leaders in the article below.
