The National Assembly (French: Assemblée nationale) is the main law-making body of Senegal. It is a unicameral legislature, which means it has only one chamber or group of members. These members are elected by the people to represent them and create laws for the country.

In the past, the Assembly was part of a bicameral legislature. This means it had two chambers, like the Senate as an upper house. This happened from 1999 to 2001 and again from 2007 to 2012. However, the Senate was removed for the second time in September 2012, making the National Assembly the only legislative body.

What is the National Assembly?

The National Assembly is where important decisions about Senegal's future are made. Its members discuss new laws, approve the government's budget, and make sure the government is doing its job well. It's a key part of how Senegal is governed.

The Current National Assembly

The current National Assembly was formed after elections held in November 2024. It has 165 members who were chosen by voters across Senegal. These members serve for five years, working to represent the people who elected them.

How Members Are Elected

The way members are elected is a bit special. It's called a mixed-member majoritarian (MMM) system.

  • 90 members are elected from 35 different areas, called departments. In these areas, the party that gets the most votes wins all the seats.
  • 60 seats are given out based on how many votes each party gets across the whole country. This makes sure smaller parties can also have a voice.
  • There are also 15 seats set aside for Senegalese citizens who live in other countries.

When people vote, they use a single ballot to choose a party list. This one vote counts for both the local area seats and the national seats.

Presidents of the National Assembly

The National Assembly has a leader called the President of the National Assembly. This person is in charge of the meetings and makes sure everything runs smoothly. You can find a full list of past presidents in the article about the Presidents of the National Assembly of Senegal.
