Hoard Historical Museum and Dairy Shrine

The National Dairy Shrine has a museum located in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. This museum shares a visitor center with the Hoard Historical Museum. The Hoard Historical Museum is in what used to be the house of William D. Hoard.

Who was William D. Hoard?

William D. Hoard was an important person in Wisconsin's history. He was the 16th governor of Wisconsin. He also strongly supported the dairy industry. He did this through his weekly newspaper, Hoard's Dairyman. This newspaper shared important information about dairy farming.

What You Can See at the Museums

The National Dairy Shrine's museum shows the history of dairying. You can see many old objects used in dairy farming. These include butter churns, which were used to make butter. There are also early milking machines. You can also see items used for the Babcock test. This test helps find out how much fat is in milk. It was invented nearby at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

The Hoard Historical Museum focuses on the history of the local area. It has displays about different topics. You can see dioramas of mounted birds. There are also artifacts from Native American tribes. One exhibit tells the story of Sauk chief Black Hawk and the 1832 Black Hawk War. Other exhibits feature local poet Lorine Niedecker, old quilts, and antique clothing. There is also a display about the Foster House, a home from the mid-1800s. One special exhibit talks about Abraham Lincoln. It shows what he did in the area when he was a young man.

The Fort Atkinson Historical Society runs both of these museums.
