How MoMAK Started
The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, or MoMAK, has an interesting history. It first opened on March 1, 1963. Back then, it was an annex, or extra building, for the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo.
The building it used was once part of the Kyoto Municipal Exhibition Hall. Kyoto City gave this building to the National Museum after it was fixed up. On June 1, 1967, the Kyoto Annex Museum officially became the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto.
Seventeen years later, the old building was taken down. A brand new building was built in its place. This new building was designed by a famous architect named Fumihiko Maki. The museum opened its doors to the public in this new building on October 26, 1986.
What You Can See at MoMAK

MoMAK is a special museum that collects and keeps artworks from the 1900s and beyond. It focuses on art from Japan and other countries. The museum especially highlights artists and art styles from Kyoto and the Kansai area in western Japan. This includes beautiful Japanese-style paintings from the Kyoto School.
The museum's galleries show different types of art. You can see Japanese-style paintings (called nihonga) and Western-style paintings (called yōga). They also display prints, sculptures, and crafts. These crafts include ceramics, textiles, metalworks, wood and bamboo items, lacquers, and jewelry. Photography is also a big part of their collection.
The artworks on display change about twenty times a year. This means there's always something new to see! You can find important modern art from Japan. The museum also features modern and contemporary art from Europe and America.
Finding Art in Japan
MoMAK is part of a special system called the Union Catalog of the Collections of the National Art Museums, Japan. This is like a big online library for art. It helps people find artworks held by four main national art museums in Japan.
These four museums are:
- National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto (MoMAK)
- National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT)
- National Museum of Art, Osaka (NMAO)
- National Museum of Western Art (NMWA)
Right now, this online catalog is still being built. So, only some of the artworks can be found there.
