The Natterer's slaty antshrike (Thamnophilus stictocephalus) is a small bird that lives in parts of South America. It belongs to a bird family called Thamnophilidae, which are often known as antbirds. These birds are found in northern Bolivia and a large area of Brazil. They live near big rivers like the Tocantins River, Xingu, Tapajós, and Madeira River in the southern Amazon.
This bird was once thought to be the same as another widespread bird called the slaty antshrike. However, scientists later realized they were different species. So, the Natterer's slaty antshrike got its own special scientific name.

Where Natterer's Slaty Antshrikes Live
Natterer's slaty antshrikes prefer certain types of places to live. Their natural habitats are usually warm and humid.
Forest Homes
These birds live in two main kinds of forests:
- Subtropical or tropical dry forests: These forests are warm all year round. They have a dry season when many trees might lose their leaves.
- Subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests: These forests are also warm but get a lot more rain. They are often found in lower areas, not high up in mountains.
These forest types provide the perfect environment for the antshrikes to find food and build their nests.
Discovery of the Natterer's Slaty Antshrike
The Natterer's slaty antshrike was first officially described by a scientist a long time ago.
Who Discovered It?
An Austrian ornithologist named August von Pelzeln described this bird in 1868. An ornithologist is a scientist who studies birds. Pelzeln gave the bird its current binomial name, Thamnophilus stictocephalus. A binomial name is like a scientific first and last name for a species. It helps scientists all over the world know exactly which animal they are talking about.
