Navajo Mountain High School is a high school located in Navajo Mountain, Utah, in the United States. It is part of the Navajo Nation, a large Native American territory in southwestern San Juan County.
Navajo Mountain High School is part of the San Juan School District. Even though it's in Utah, it uses an Arizona mailing address. The school is in a very remote area. It's about 35 miles (56 km) from the nearest gas station. The Navajo Mountain Chapter has said that this community is the most isolated in the entire Navajo Nation.
School History
After the Great Recession in 2008, the number of staff at the school went down. This happened even though more students started attending. In 2009, there were seven full-time staff members. By 2014, there were only three full-time staff and one part-time counselor.
In 2017, the school started a FIRST Robotics Competition team. This team did very well and qualified for the FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas.
The school was also shown in a documentary in 2021. It was featured in Scenes From The Glittering World, which was part of the Independent Lens series.
Students and Staff
As of 2014, all the students at Navajo Mountain High School were Native American. Most of the 33 students were fully of Navajo heritage. Some students were entirely of Paiute heritage. Other students had mixed heritage, like Navajo and Hopi, or Navajo and Paiute.
About one-third of the students were considered to be without a stable home. Also, 31 out of 33 students received free or reduced-price meals at school. This program helps students get healthy food.
In 2014, one staff member was both an administrator and a teacher. There were also two other full-time teachers and a part-time counselor. In 2009, all school staff worked full-time. This included one principal, one counselor, and five teachers.
