What Happened Before: Key Stories

"Beyond the Grid": A New Dimension

This story was told in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #31–39.

After escaping from the evil Lord Drakkon and his plan to destroy everything, a group of Power Rangers found themselves in a strange new dimension. Many of them couldn't even use their powers there!

They met Ellarien, who was the Solar Ranger, and her friend Remi. Ellarien had a special Morpher called the Solarix. Because of this, they were chased by a mean group called the Crimson Raiders, led by a bad guy named the Praetor.

To fight the Praetor, Kimberly Hart (who was an alternate version called Ranger Slayer) put together a new team. It included Tanya Sloan (Yellow Zeo Ranger), Andros (Red Space Ranger), Mike Corbett (Magna Defender), Cam Watanabe (Green Samurai Ranger), and Heckyl (Dark Dino Ranger).

Ellarien shared that a stranger gave her the Solarix before they died. The Praetor wanted the Solarix to get to the Morphin Grid, which is where the Rangers get their powers. After some battles, Ellarien and Remi joined the Rangers.

The Rangers learned that Ellarien's dimension used to be connected to the Morphin Grid, but it was cut off on purpose. The Praetor tried to trick Mike into stealing the Solarix, but Mike resisted. Ellarien then found out the Praetor was actually a Morphin Master who wanted to destroy the Solarix.

Ellarien shared the Solarix's power with Kimberly's team, turning them into Solar Rangers! They used the Solarix to reconnect Ellarien's dimension to the Morphin Grid and sent the Praetor away. The Rangers then returned to their own universe.

"Forever Rangers": Secrets and New Powers

This story was in Go Go Power Rangers #13–20.

After Kimberly's secret as the Ranger Slayer was revealed, her boyfriend Matthew Cook wanted her to tell him she was a Power Ranger. But Kimberly refused, and they broke up.

One day, Rita Repulsa used a spell that sent herself, Jason Lee Scott, and Trini Kwan to another planet. Their Ranger colors even switched! While the other Rangers tried to bring them back, Rita went to her daughter, Queen Adriyel, to get the Green Power Coin.

Meanwhile, Billy Cranston and Zack Taylor met a robot named Alpha-1. Rita tried to use her mother's spirit, Lady Fienna, to unlock the Green Power Coin's power. Lady Fienna realized Rita's trick and confronted her.

Goldar attacked the school to find someone worthy of the Green Power Coin. Alpha-1 tried to kill Goldar, but the Rangers stopped him. This made Zordon realize Alpha-1 was too dangerous. Alpha-1 later self-destructed.

With the Green Power Coin's power unlocked, Rita put Fienna's soul into it. Kimberly and Matthew tried to fix their relationship. Jason also started training for a big fight against Tommy Oliver.

The Main Story: Necessary Evil

Part 1: New Powers and New Rangers

This part was in Go Go Power Rangers #21–32.

Tommy Oliver, the Green Ranger, started losing his powers and thought about leaving the team. Lord Zedd noticed this and planned to use it to his advantage. He had already taken over from Rita and destroyed the Dinozords.

One night, Jason was visited by the Blue Emissary. This mysterious being warned him about Tommy's powers fading and about other people being affected by the Morphin Grid breaking apart. The Blue Emissary also made Jason remember the war against Lord Drakkon, telling him he had to handle things alone.

Lord Zedd turned the school's pet rabbit into a monster called Warbunny, but the Rangers changed him back. Jason told the Blue Emissary he remembered everything and had seen visions of people with uncontrolled Morphin Energy.

The Blue Emissary tried to convince Zordon and Alpha-5 to find a new power source for Tommy. Grace Sterling revealed that the Command Center had secret rooms. Zack and Trini suspected Jason was hiding something. The Blue Emissary then restored Zack and Trini's memories too, so they could help.

Tommy went to the Tower of Light, where the White Ranger power was kept by its guardian, Saba. Zedd appeared, corrupted Saba, and revealed he had stolen Tommy's Green Ranger power to find the Tower. Zedd offered Tommy a place in his evil empire, but Tommy refused and seemed to sacrifice himself.

Tommy woke up to find Saba, who explained it was a test to see if he was worthy of the White Light. Saba then guided Tommy back to Earth to help the other Rangers with their Thunderzords.

With his new White Ranger powers, Tommy became the new leader. Jason, Trini, and Zack traveled to a planet called Khoojdah with the Blue Emissary and his robot, Xi. There, they rescued a person named Kiya.

Back on Earth, Zedd tried to power up his giant Zord, Serpentera. He tried to steal secrets from Promethea, a special base, but Grace Sterling tricked him. Tommy used the Tigerzord and Promethea's Mechazord to stop Zedd's monster.

When Zedd unleashed Serpentera on a deserted planet, the Rangers managed to get the Sword of Light. Using it, Jason, Trini, and Zack's powers were transferred to new Rangers: Rocky DeSantos, Aisha Campbell, and Adam Park.

Jason, Trini, Zack, and Kiya then became the Omega Rangers for the first time on a planet called Safehaven.

Part 2: Omega Rangers and New Threats

This part was in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #40–50.

Tommy Oliver (now the White Ranger), Kimberly, and Billy welcomed Rocky, Aisha, and Adam as the new Red, Yellow, and Black Rangers. While the new team got used to their roles, Tommy worked on being a better leader.

Meanwhile, Jason, Trini, and Zack became the Omega Rangers on Safehaven, joining Kiya, Xi, and the Blue Emissary. They traveled to another planet and fought Garrison Vox, who had strange energy powers. Kiya revealed she accidentally hurt her family after getting Morphin Grid energy.

The Omega Rangers then went to Breel, where Queen Adriyel (Rita Repulsa's daughter) was hosting a meeting of villains. They almost got caught, but Adriyel was killed by Cavotus, one of her enslaved people. The Blue Emissary suggested locking up Cavotus.

On Earth, Lord Zedd hired a fighter named Dayne. Dayne was very strong and injured Tommy during a fight. The Omega Rangers arrived just in time to capture Dayne, but they couldn't tell the other Rangers who they were to keep the timeline safe.

Jason convinced the Blue Emissary to let the Omega Rangers attack Lord Zedd's castle. After a fight on the moon, the Omega Rangers captured Zedd! However, Goldar and Zedd's other helpers escaped with Zedd's broken staff.

Later, Kiya became worried about Tommy turning into Lord Drakkon after seeing Jason's memories. She killed the Blue Emissary and almost destroyed Xi. She also freed Garrison Vox and Cavotus to form her own team, the Anointed, planning to get rid of all Rangers.

With Xi's help, Jason, Trini, and Zack returned to Earth. They had to reveal their secret identities to the other Rangers, as Jason was injured.

This revelation caused some distrust between the teams. While Jason recovered, Rocky, Aisha, and Adam helped Trini and Zack travel to Safehaven, where Kiya was gathering followers. Tommy and Jason argued but eventually decided to return to Safehaven together.

When Cavotus attacked Xi's spaceship, the Ranger Slayer saved Rocky, Aisha, Adam, Trini, and Zack. She killed Cavotus and explained her own team's journey.

In the final battle, Ellarien and Remi, the Solar Rangers, returned. They used the Solarix to take away the Anointed's Morphin Energy. Jason and Tommy defeated Garrison Vox, and Trini defeated Kiya. Dayne freed Lord Zedd, and they both ran away.

The Ranger Slayer and the Solar Rangers went back to their own universes. Kiya and Garrison Vox were locked up, and the other Anointed were forgiven. Jason, Trini, and Zack remained Omega Rangers. Then, something unexpected happened: Tommy's evil version, Lord Drakkon, returned! He had survived the "Shattered Grid" event and came back to warn them about a new danger.
