A Look Back: Negreet's History

Negreet was started in 1822. More and more families began to settle there after Fort Jesup was built nearby. This fort helped bring order to an area once known as the "Neutral Strip," which didn't have clear laws.

The community grew well with many farms and plantations. However, the American Civil War (1861-1865) greatly affected the area. It caused a lot of damage and forced many people to leave their homes.

Fairness in Schools

In 2014, a group called the ACLU took legal action. They filed a lawsuit against the school board and leaders at Negreet High School. The lawsuit claimed that a student was treated unfairly because of his Buddhist faith. It also said that the school district often promoted Christian beliefs to students. In March 2014, a U.S. District Court decided against the school board. This ruling helped make sure schools respect all students' beliefs.
