A Look Back at Nehawka's History
The first people to settle permanently in Nehawka arrived in 1855. The village itself was officially planned and mapped out in 1887. This happened when a new railroad line was built and extended to that area.
The name Nehawka comes from the Omaha and Otoe Native American languages. It means "rustling water," which might refer to a nearby stream or river.
