John Neil Reagan (born September 16, 1908 – died December 11, 1996) was an American businessman. He worked as a manager at a radio station. He also became a senior producer for CBS, a big television network. Later, he was a senior vice president at McCann Erickson, a large advertising company. Neil was the older brother of Ronald Reagan, who became a famous Hollywood actor and later the President of the United States.
Life and Career
Neil Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois, on September 16, 1908. He was baptized Catholic, like his father. When he was a baby, he went to his mother's church. Later, he followed his father's religion. His younger brother, Ronald, was raised in their mother's church.
People described Neil as a lively and friendly person when he was young. His family and friends often called him "Moon." This nickname came from a popular comic strip character named Moon Mullins.
In 1933, Neil finished college at Eureka College. He earned a degree in Economics. After college, he moved to California, just like his brother Ronald. There, Neil started a successful career. He worked as a television producer and also in advertising.
From the 1930s to the 1950s, Neil Reagan directed a radio show called Dr. Christian. This show starred actor Jean Hersholt. Neil also had a short acting career in Hollywood. He appeared in films like Tugboat Annie Sails Again (1940) and Doughboys in Ireland (1943). Later, Neil Reagan directed his brother Ronald in the television series Death Valley Days.
Neil was very involved in his community. He served as president of advertising clubs in Hollywood and Los Angeles. He also helped many community groups. These included the Crippled Children's Society of Los Angeles and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles.
He was also involved in politics. He was a representative for California at the 1972 Republican National Convention. He was also a representative at the 1980 Republican National Convention. Neil Reagan served two terms as a trustee for Eureka College. He passed away from heart failure in a hospital in San Diego on December 11, 1996. He was 88 years old.
In 1970, the Reagan Physical Education Center was opened at Eureka College. It was named in honor of both Ronald and Neil Reagan. Twelve years later, Ronald Reagan returned to this center. He gave an important speech there about foreign policy. It was known as the START speech or Eureka speech.
Family
Neil Reagan married Ruth Elizabeth "Bess" Hoffman in 1935. She passed away in 2010 at the age of 102. Neil and Bess did not have any children.
