History of Tampico
The land where Tampico now stands used to be a wet, marshy area called a slough. The first non-Native American settlers arrived in 1852. The area officially became Tampico Township in 1861.
Between 1863 and 1864, the land was drained so people could build on it. A local railroad, the CB&Q, started running in 1871. This railroad helped the village grow, but it stopped operating in the early 1980s. In June 1874, a strong tornado hit Tampico, destroying 27 buildings. The village of Tampico was officially formed in 1875.
