How to Play Neko Atsume
In Neko Atsume, your main goal is to attract many different cats to your virtual yard. You do this by buying yummy food, fun toys, and comfy furniture.
When cats visit, you can watch them play with the items you've placed. You can also take pictures of them, which you can save in a special album. The cats will often leave you gifts. These gifts include silver or gold "fish" (which are like small dried sardines called niboshi in Japan). They might also leave you unique "mementos."
You can get more fish by entering a daily password. After five daily passwords, you get a free can of high-quality food. You use these fish to buy new types of food, more toys, or even change how your yard looks.
Your Yard and Remodels
After you expand your garden for the first time, you can change its style. There are seven different styles to choose from. These include Original, Zen, Rustic, Modern, Western, Sugary, or Cafe.
The game never truly ends. Cats will keep visiting your yard as long as you keep putting out food for them. Neko Atsume is a free game to download and play. However, you can buy extra fish if you want to get new items faster.
Meeting All the Cats
As of 2019, there are 66 different cats you can collect in the game. Some of these are "rare cats." These special cats only appear when you place certain items and foods in your yard.
Each cat has its own unique name, personality, and look. For example, some cats have different colored eyes. You can even rename the cats after you meet them. Rare cats often have a special way they interact with their favorite items. Many rare cats in the English version have funny names that are puns on famous people or characters. For example, there's Lady Meow Meow, Mr. Meowgi, and Guy Furry.
Making the Game: Development
Yutaka Takazaki is the person who created Neko Atsume. He said his goal was to make a game that even kids could enjoy. He wanted it to be easy to play without needing a lot of skill or time.
Mr. Takazaki loves cats himself. He has said he wasn't sure why the game became so popular. He made the game in between working on other apps. He wanted it to be a simple game where cat lovers could just relax and watch the cats. He also said they wouldn't add cheats or make it too complicated.
Game Release and Updates
An English version of the game, called Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector, came out on October 30, 2015. It was available on both Android and iOS app stores. Later, an update allowed players to switch between the Japanese and English versions anytime.
The game has received many updates over the years.
- In version 1.5.5, your yard might get covered in snow for about 24 hours. This changes the look of your yard and the music. You could also find a new rare cat named Frosty during these snow days.
- Version 1.6.0, released in March 2016, added new common cats, rare cats, and more toys. It also added a "gallery" where you could buy phone wallpapers with your gold fish.
- Later updates in 2016 and 2017 continued to add more cats, toys, and yard remodels.
In September 2017, the creators announced Neko Atsume VR. This is a virtual reality version of the game. It came out for the PlayStation 4 video game console in Japan in May 2018. It was released internationally in August 2021.
Neko Atsume Movie
A Japanese movie based on the game was released on April 8, 2017. It is called 「ja:ねこあつめの家」(Neko Atsume no ie), which means "The House of Cat Collection."
The movie is about a writer who is having trouble thinking of new ideas. He moves to a small house in the countryside. This house turns out to be very popular with cats! As he puts out items to make the cats comfortable, his ability to write slowly comes back.
