Ellen (Nellie) Pucell Unthank (born November 6, 1846 – died July 21, 1915) was a brave Mormon pioneer and settler in Utah. She is remembered as a symbol of amazing strength and courage, especially because she faced incredible challenges.

Ellen Unthank: A Pioneer's Story

Ellen Pucell was born in Valehouse, a small place in Cheshire, England. Her parents were Samuel and Margaret Pucell. When she was a young girl, her family decided to move to Utah Territory in America. They traveled with a group called the Martin Handcart Company. This was a very long and difficult journey across the country.

A Challenging Journey

During their journey, Ellen faced great sadness. Both of her parents passed away. She had to continue the rest of the trip without them. She walked most of the way, even without shoes. The weather became very cold and snowy. Because of the freezing temperatures, Ellen suffered from frostbite. This is a serious injury that happens when body parts freeze.

A Symbol of Courage

When Ellen finally arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, her legs were badly damaged by the frostbite. Doctors had to remove her legs below the knee. This was done without any pain medicine, which must have been incredibly difficult. Because of how the surgery was done, her legs never fully healed. Despite this constant challenge, Ellen never asked for pity. She showed incredible courage and nobility. She even did laundry while kneeling to help raise her six children.

On April 22, 1871, Ellen married William Unthank. She lived to be 69 years old and passed away in Cedar City, Utah. Today, there is a special statue of Ellen Unthank. It was created by an artist named Jerry Anderson. The statue is located on the campus of Southern Utah University, which is where her home used to be. It shows her with feet, honoring her spirit and journey.
