Nelson Pereira dos Santos (born October 22, 1928 – died April 21, 2018) was a famous Brazilian movie director. He made many important films. One of his most well-known movies is Vidas Secas (which means Barren Lives). This film was based on a popular book by the Brazilian writer Graciliano Ramos.

About Nelson Pereira dos Santos

Nelson Pereira dos Santos was born in São Paulo, Brazil. He was named after Almirante Horatio Nelson, a famous admiral. His father loved movies and took young Nelson to the cinema often.

When Nelson was in high school, he already loved reading. At 15, he joined a political group called the Brazilian Communist Party. At that time, the government of Getúlio Vargas had made this party illegal.

His First Films

Nelson Pereira dos Santos directed his first full-length movie, Rio 40°, in 1955. This film showed what life was like in the favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro. It was a very important movie because it inspired many other directors. It helped start a new style of filmmaking called Cinema Novo (New Cinema).

In 1963 and again in 1981, Nelson was chosen to be a judge at the Moscow International Film Festival. This shows how respected he was in the film world.

Famous International Films

One of his most famous movies outside Brazil is Como Era Gostoso o Meu Francês (How Tasty Was My Little Frenchman), made in 1971. This film was shown at the Berlin International Film Festival.

The movie is set in the 1500s. It tells a story about the Tupinamba tribe, who were native people in Brazil. The film uses humor to talk about how European countries tried to take over lands in Brazil. It also sadly shows how many native tribes were harmed and how their way of life was destroyed.

His 1994 film, The Third Bank of the River, was also shown at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Later Works and Legacy

In 2006, Nelson Pereira dos Santos made a film called Brasília 18%. This movie looked at some serious issues in Brazilian politics, like dishonest politicians.

Nelson Pereira dos Santos became a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 2006. This is a very important group of writers and thinkers in Brazil.
