History of Nemacolin Resort
The resort gets its name from Chief Nemacolin. He was a Native American chief from the Lenape tribe. Around 1740, he created a path through the Laurel Highlands mountains. This path connected what is now Cumberland, Maryland, and Brownsville, Pennsylvania.
In 1968, a businessman from Pittsburgh named Willard Rockwell bought the land. He created a private hunting area called Nemacolin Trails Hunting Reserve. He built a hunting lodge, a golf course, and even an airstrip. Two lakes, named Louise and Carol, were added. Also, Beaver Creek was made into a great place for trout fishing.
In September 1970, the hunting lodge opened to everyone as the Nemacolin Inn. Later, in 1987, the property was struggling. That's when Joseph A. Hardy III, who started the 84 Lumber Company, bought it. He turned the 400-acre complex into a fancy hotel and resort. Over the years, he made the resort much bigger, growing it to 2000 acres.
In 2002, Joseph Hardy gave the resort to his daughter, Maggie Hardy Magerko. She continued to make it even better. In 2007, one of Nemacolin's hotels, Falling Rock, earned a special "Five Diamond" award. Its fancy restaurant, Lautrec, also received a "Five Star" rating for several years.
In 2008, Nemacolin had the largest collection of wine bottles in Pennsylvania. There were about 17,000 bottles! In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the resort was used as the filming location for the 25th season of the TV show The Bachelor.
Lady Luck Casino Nemacolin
On July 1, 2013, a casino called Lady Luck Casino Nemacolin opened at the resort. At first, only resort guests or members could enter the casino. But in 2019, the rules changed. Now, anyone can visit the casino without having to be a resort guest.
