The Nematogenys inermis is a special type of mountain catfish. It is the only living species in its family, called Nematogenyiidae. This fish lives only in Chile, which means it is endemic to that country. You can find it in the fresh waters of central Chile. This amazing fish can grow to be about 40.7 centimeters (about 16 inches) long!
About This Fish
This catfish has a smooth body with no scales, almost like skin. It has three pairs of special whiskers, called barbels, around its mouth. These barbels help it feel and find food in the water. One pair is on its chin, another near its mouth (maxillary), and a third pair near its nose (nasal).
Unlike many other fish, the Nematogenys inermis does not have an adipose fin. This is a small, fleshy fin found on the back of some fish, usually between the dorsal fin and the tail fin. Also, the bony flap that covers its gills, called the opercle, does not have any sharp spines.
Past Relatives
Scientists have found evidence of one other species that belonged to the same group as the Nematogenys inermis. This extinct species is called Nematogenys cuivi. It means that this type of fish lived a long time ago but is no longer around today.
