Nemuro Province (in Japanese: 根室国, Nemuro-no kuni) was an old area in Japan on the big island of Hokkaidō. It was like a special region or district. This province existed for a short time, from 1869 to 1882.

The borders of Nemuro Province were very similar to the area we now call Nemuro Subprefecture.

A Look Back: Nemuro Province's History

How Nemuro Province Started

Before 1869, the large northern island of Japan was not officially called Hokkaido. In 1869, it was given the name Hokkaido. At this time, the government decided to divide Hokkaido into several smaller parts. These parts were called provinces.

Nemuro Province was one of these new areas created in 1869. It was set up to help manage and develop the northern parts of Japan.

Changes in Japan's Regions

During a time in Japan called the Meiji period, many big changes happened. The government wanted to make Japan more modern. One of these changes was how the country was divided.

The old provinces, like Nemuro Province, were slowly changed into new areas called prefectures. This happened during the 1870s. Maps of Japan were updated to show these new prefectures.

When Nemuro Province Ended

In 1882, Nemuro Province and the other ten provinces on Hokkaido were changed again. They were combined and reorganized into three larger prefectures. These new prefectures were Hakodate Prefecture, Sapporo Prefecture, and Nemuro Prefecture.

This meant that Nemuro Province, as a separate old province, no longer existed. Its land became part of the new Nemuro Prefecture.
