The Nepaug River is a cool waterway in Connecticut, USA. It starts when two smaller streams, North Nepaug Brook and Cedar Swamp Brook, join together. This happens about one mile (1.6 km) east of Bakerville.

The river flows for about 10.6 miles (17.1 km) (that's about 17 kilometers). It eventually joins the Farmington River near Collinsville.

Fun on the Water: Whitewater Paddling

If you love adventure, the Nepaug River has a popular spot for whitewater paddling! This exciting route starts near Dings Road. It's about one-tenth of a mile (0.16 km) mile downstream from where the river begins.

River Rapids: What to Expect

The whitewater section of the Nepaug River is mostly Class I-II. This means the rapids are easy to moderate. They are perfect for paddlers who are just starting out or want a fun, not-too-crazy ride. This section continues until you reach the U.S. Route 202 bridge.

The Nepaug Reservoir

After the whitewater section, the river flows into the Nepaug Reservoir. This large body of water is located in the northwest part of the river's journey.

How the Reservoir Was Made

The Nepaug Reservoir was created by the Nepaug Dam. This dam is about one mile (1.6 km) from the Farmington River. The dam helps control the water flow. Any extra water from the dam flows into the final part of the Nepaug River. This water then travels east to meet the Farmington River in Collinsville.

Reservoir Size and Management

The Nepaug Reservoir is quite big! It stretches about two miles (3.2 km) (3.2 kilometers) from north to south. It is also about one mile (1.6 km) (1.6 kilometers) wide from east to west. The Metropolitan District Commission of Connecticut manages this important reservoir.
