A Look at Neshoba's Past
Neshoba has an interesting history, especially with railroads and local businesses.
Railroad Days
For many years, Neshoba was located along the Gulf, Mobile and Ohio Railroad. This railroad was very important for moving goods and people. The community even had its own train station, called a railroad depot. This depot was open from 1907 until 1933.
Becoming a Community
Neshoba officially became an incorporated community on November 27, 1906. When a community is "incorporated," it means it forms its own local government. However, Neshoba later became "disincorporated," meaning it no longer had its own official town government.
Busy Businesses in 1910
Back in 1910, Neshoba was a busy place! It had many different stores and shops. There were six general stores, which sold a little bit of everything. You could also find a millinery (a shop that sold hats), a furniture store, and a wagon store. For repairs, there was a machine shop, and for tools, a hardware store.
The Post Office Story
In 1971, Neshoba was one of only two communities in Neshoba County that still had an operating post office. A post office is where you send and receive mail. However, Neshoba's post office has since closed. Now, the only post office left in the county is in Philadelphia. Long ago, in the early 1900s, Neshoba County had as many as 40 small post offices working at the same time!
