Where is Union, Mississippi?
Union is located in the central part of Mississippi. Most of the town is in Newton County. A smaller part of it stretches north into Neshoba County. The town covers an area of about 3.4 square miles (8.9 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
A Quick Look at Union's History
Union has an interesting history, especially from the American Civil War. In February 1864, a famous Union general named William Tecumseh Sherman traveled through Newton County. He burned down the county seat, which was the main town of Decatur.
During his trip back, General Sherman stopped and slept at Boler's Inn in Union. It is said that he ordered his soldiers not to burn Union. He reportedly said that "Union" was what his men were fighting to save. Instead of burning it, he made the town a temporary headquarters for his army.
