Nesmith Point is a tall peak located in Multnomah County, Oregon. It sits right on the edge of the famous Columbia River Gorge. At about 3,848 feet (1,173 meters) high, it is the highest point along the rim of the Gorge.

This peak is found in a quiet, wild area called the Mark O. Hatfield Wilderness. This wilderness is part of the Mount Hood National Forest. Nesmith Point also touches the boundary of the Bull Run Watershed, which is a protected area.

How Was Nesmith Point Formed?

Nesmith Point is part of the Boring Lava Field, which is an area with many old volcanoes. This peak was created about one million years ago from volcanic activity.

Its current shape was greatly changed by huge ancient floods. These floods, known as the Missoula Floods, were incredibly powerful. They carved away the northern side of the mountain, giving it the look it has today.

Exploring Nesmith Point

Long ago, there was a fire lookout station at the very top of Nesmith Point. This station helped spot forest fires, but it is no longer there.

Getting to Nesmith Point by car is tricky. The only roads go through the closed Bull Run Watershed Management Area. This means you can only reach the peak legally by hiking trails.

Popular Hiking Trails

Several trails lead to Nesmith Point, offering different ways to explore the area:

  • The Nesmith Point Trail #428 starts from a road near Interstate 84. It climbs steeply up the Gorge walls through a narrow valley called a box canyon.
  • The Horsetail Creek Trail #425 provides a route from the west.
  • The Moffett Creek Trail #430 offers another path from the east.

These trails connect to a larger network of paths throughout the Columbia River Gorge. This makes it possible for hikers to explore many beautiful areas.
