    Little Nespelem River

The Nespelem River is a river in the United States. It flows into the Columbia River. This makes it a "tributary" of the Columbia River. The Nespelem River is found entirely within Washington State. It is also completely inside Okanogan County. A special part of its journey is through the Colville Indian Reservation.

The name "Nespelem" comes from a Native American word. It is believed to be from the word nesilim. This word means "flat land."

River's Journey: Where it Flows

The Nespelem River starts in the eastern part of Okanogan County. It begins its flow by heading south. As it travels, smaller streams join it. These streams include Stepstone Creek, North Star Creek, and Armstrong Creek.

Passing Through Nespelem Town

The river then flows past the town of Nespelem, Washington. This town is important. It is the main office for the Colville Indian Reservation. After leaving the town, the Nespelem River changes direction. It turns and flows towards the west.

Joining the Columbia River

Just before it reaches the Columbia River, another stream joins it. This stream is called the Little Nespelem River. Finally, the Nespelem River empties into the Columbia River. This meeting point is special. It is located below the Grand Coulee Dam. It is also above the Chief Joseph Dam. The water in the Columbia River here is held back by the Chief Joseph Dam. This part of the river is known as Rufus Woods Lake.
