History of Nestlé Waters
Early Beginnings
In 1843, a person named Henri Nestlé opened his first factory. This factory bottled lemonade and water. Later, in 1866, the larger Nestlé Group was created.
Growing the Water Business
Nestlé started to get involved in the bottled water business in 1969. They bought a part of a French company called Société Générale des Eaux Minérales de Vittel. In 1974, they also bought the Blaue Quellen group in Germany.
By 1987, Nestlé S.A. owned most of Vittel. They also joined with a company called Arrowhead.
Becoming a World Leader
A big step happened in 1992. Nestlé bought Source Perrier S.A. This made Nestlé the biggest bottled water company in the world. At that time, it was called Nestlé Sources International (NSI).
In 1996, NSI changed its name. It became Perrier Vittel S.A. This helped them grow even more around the world.
In 1998, they bought Sanpellegrino S.p.A. This was Italy's top bottled water company. That same year, they launched Nestlé Pure Life. This was their first bottled water brand under the Nestlé name. It was sold in many places.
In 2000, Nestlé Aquarel was launched. This was a spring water brand sold across Europe. It was available in six different markets.
Expanding Globally
In 2001, Perrier Vittel bought Al Manhal. This was the leading bottled water company in Saudi Arabia. This made them the top bottled water company in the Middle East.
In 2002, Perrier Vittel changed its name again. It became Nestlé Waters.
Nestlé Waters bought the Powwow Group in 2003. In 2005, they grew their business in Africa. They launched Nestlé Pure Life in Nigeria. They also started a partnership in Algeria.
In 2006, Nestlé Waters bought most of the shares in Erikli. This made them the market leader in Turkey.
In 2007, Nestlé Waters bought Sources Minérales Henniez S.A. This made them the leader in Switzerland's bottled water market. They also made agreements in Mexico and Chile.
Nestlé Pure Life's Success
By 2008, Nestlé Pure Life became the world's leading bottled water brand. They sold 5 billion liters around the world in just ten years.
In 2009, Nestlé Waters grew more in important countries. They bought Àguas de Santa Barbara in Brazil. They also bought Dashan Drinks in China. Dashan Drinks was the top bottled water company in Yunnan Province.
Water Use and Concerns
In 2009, some research from Nestlé executives was shared. It talked about how the world might run out of fresh water. They pointed out that eating a lot of meat uses a lot of water. This is because animals eat crops like corn and soy, which need much water to grow. They said there isn't enough fresh water for everyone if the world's population keeps growing. The report suggested we need to use water more carefully.
Also in 2009, some groups protested against Nestlé Waters. They felt the company was taking too much local water. They said this was for profit, and it hurt local water sources. One group mentioned how Nestlé bypassed a local rule in Shapleigh, Maine. This rule was meant to keep local control over water. Nestlé said they were working to be open about where their water comes from.
Recent Developments
In 2012, Nestlé Waters made a deal with Ambev in Brazil. This helped them distribute their products.
In 2013, new factories opened in Buxton, United Kingdom, and Pocheon Edong, South Korea. The South Korea factory was with Pulmuone Waters. They also bought the Mineral water spring Vale do Sol in Brazil.
In 2020, Nestlé Waters planned to sell its Canadian water bottling part. This deal was with Ice River Springs. However, the deal did not get approved in time. So, Nestlé canceled it.
In 2021, Nestlé announced a big sale. They agreed to sell many of their water brands to One Rock Capital Partners and Metropoulos & Co. This included spring water and mountain brands in Canada and the US. It also included purified water brands and a delivery service. However, the brands Perrier, S.Pellegrino, and Acqua Panna were not part of this sale. In April 2021, the sale was completed. Their US operations are now part of a company called BlueTriton Brands.
