About Perrier Water
The water for Perrier comes from a spring that is naturally bubbly. This means it already has carbon dioxide gas mixed in. However, the water and the gas are collected separately.
First, the water is cleaned. Then, when it's put into bottles, the carbon dioxide gas is added back. This makes sure that the bottled Perrier has the same amount of bubbles as the water from the spring.
In 1990, Perrier stopped saying its water was "naturally sparkling" on its bottles. This happened because the United States Food and Drug Administration asked them to change it.
Since 2019, Perrier water is no longer "reinforced with gas from the source." Instead, it's "with the addition of carbon dioxide." The company says this change helps them use less water and be better for the environment.
History of Perrier
The spring where Perrier water comes from is in Southern France. It was first called Les Bouillens. People have used this spring as a spa (a place for health treatments with water) since the time of the Roman Empire. Around 218 BC, a famous general named Hannibal and his army even rested there and drank the water.
Perrier water was first sold in Britain in 1863. A local doctor named Louis Perrier bought the spring in 1898. He ran a spa there and also started putting the water into bottles to sell.
Later, Dr. Perrier sold the spring to St John Harmsworth. He was a rich visitor from Britain. Harmsworth closed the spa because spas were becoming less popular. He renamed the spring Source Perrier. He started bottling the water in its unique green bottles. The shape of the bottles was inspired by the Indian clubs that Harmsworth used for exercise.
Harmsworth sold Perrier in Britain. At that time, French products were seen as stylish. Perrier was advertised as the "Champagne of mineral water." For a while, most of Perrier's sales were in Britain and the U.S.
In 1990, Perrier's good reputation was affected. A lab in the United States found a chemical called benzene in some bottles. Benzene is a substance that can be harmful. Perrier said it was a mistake made by a worker during filtering. They said the spring itself was clean. This problem led to about 160 million bottles of Perrier being taken off shelves around the world.
Two years later, in 1992, Nestlé bought Perrier. Nestlé is one of the world's biggest food and drink companies.
Bottling Perrier
Perrier comes in different sizes of glass bottles, like 750 ml, 330 ml, and 200 ml. You can also find it in 330 ml cans. In some places, a 250 ml can is also available. All Perrier bottles have a special 'teardrop' shape and are a signature green color.
In 2001, the company started using plastic bottles made from PET. They spent 11 years researching to make sure the plastic would keep the water's taste and its famous bubbles.
In 2013, Perrier celebrated its 150th birthday. They released a special series of bottles inspired by the famous artist Andy Warhol.
In 2019, Perrier launched another special edition. It featured artwork by the artist duo Dabsmyla. This was done to support modern artists.
Perrier Flavors
Perrier comes in many different flavors. The original, Lemon, and Lime flavors have been around for a long time. In 2007, they added Citron Lemon-Lime and Pamplemousse Rose (Pink Grapefruit) flavors in the United States.
In 2015, a Green Apple flavor was launched in France and the US. A Mint flavor was introduced in France in 2016.
Since 2002, new types of Perrier have come out in France. For example, Eau de Perrier has fewer bubbles than the original and comes in a blue bottle. Perrier Fluo comes in exciting flavors like ginger-cherry, peppermint, and raspberry.
In 2017, Perrier added two new flavors: Perrier Strawberry and Perrier Watermelon. These joined their existing Lime, L’Orange, Pink Grapefruit, and Green Apple flavors.
Where Perrier Is Sold
As of 2013, Perrier was sold in 140 countries around the world. Almost 1 billion bottles are sold every year!
The Perrier Awards
From 1981 to 2005, Perrier sponsored a yearly comedy award in the United Kingdom. It was called the Perrier Comedy Award, or "The Perriers". This award helped support new and talented comedians at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This festival is known as "the world's largest" arts festival. The award first recognized comedy shows, and later included stand-up comedians. After 2005, other companies took over the sponsorship, and the award is now called the Edinburgh Comedy Awards.
Perrier also started the Perrier Young Jazz Awards in 1998. These awards ran for four years, ending in 2001. They released an album each year to show off the winning jazz artists.
