History of BlueTriton Brands
The company started in 1976. It was first called Great Waters of France, Inc. Its goal was to sell Perrier water in the United States. In 1979, the company opened its first water bottling factory in the U.S. Sales grew very quickly in those early years.
In 1980, the company bought two other water brands: Calistoga and Poland Spring. Poland Spring was not doing well at the time. But over the next seven years, its sales grew a lot under the new ownership.
In 1987, the company bought Arrowhead Water. This made it the biggest bottled water company in the United States. In 1993, it also bought Deer Park Spring Water. In 1994, several of these water brands joined together. They formed a new company called Great Spring Waters of America, Inc.
In 2000, the company bought Big Sur Bottled Water, Inc. in California. It also bought a Canadian company called Aberfoyle Springs. Aberfoyle Springs had two factories in Canada. From 2002 to 2003, the Aberfoyle brand slowly changed to the Nestlé Pure Life brand.
In April 2002, the company bought Sparkling Spring Water Co. This was a large water company in the Chicago metropolitan area. It had been around for over 100 years. In the same month, Great Spring Waters of America changed its name. It became Nestlé Waters North America, Inc. Its parent company also changed its name to Nestlé Waters.
In July 2020, Nestlé Canada planned to sell its Canadian water business. This included factories in Puslinch, Ontario and Hope, British Columbia. However, the sale did not happen.
On February 16, 2021, Nestlé announced it would sell Nestlé Waters North America, Inc. The buyers were One Rock Capital Partners and Metropoulos & Co. The sale was completed in April 2021. On April 7, 2021, the company announced its new name: BlueTriton Brands. This name refers to Triton, a god from Greek myths.

Brands in Canada

Nestlé's factory in Aberfoyle, Ontario bottles water from two springs. One is the Aberfoyle spring itself. The other is Cedar Valley Spring in Erin, Ontario. Water is also bottled at a factory in Hope, British Columbia. Nestlé Waters is Canada's biggest water bottling company.
How Water is Sourced
Getting water for bottling can sometimes cause discussions. For example, Ice Mountain has been part of talks about using water from the Great Lakes. Some people worry about taking too much water from the lakes. In 2004, a court in Michigan ordered a stop to pumping water from one spring. Later, the company and local groups agreed to pump a smaller amount of water.
Poland Spring has also faced concerns in some towns in Maine. For example, in Fryeburg, Maine, Poland Spring buys a lot of water from another company. This company also sells water to the town. In 2004, the town's water system had a problem. But Poland Spring's operations could still continue. This made some people question how much water the company was taking.
Some groups want to add a tax on water taken for business. But Poland Spring says this tax would hurt their business. People have also suggested making laws to limit how much groundwater landowners can pump. In Sterling, Massachusetts, people are trying to stop Nestlé from pumping water from town land.
In Phoenix, Arizona, people have been organizing against a planned bottling factory. In Canada, a group called Wellington Water Watchers has worried about the amount of groundwater taken by the company in Aberfoyle, Ontario.
