Discovering Arrowhead Water
Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water gets its name from a special natural mark. This mark is on the side of the San Bernardino Mountains. It looks just like a giant arrowhead! This shape is completely natural; no one made it. The original water source for Arrowhead comes from cold springs. These springs are found on Strawberry Creek. This area is part of the San Bernardino National Forest.
People first wrote about the Arrowhead springs around 1820. These were priests from Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. Later, in 1863, David Noble Smith started a health center there. People visited to help with different health issues. By the 1880s, the water from Arrowhead was famous. Many believed it had special healing powers. By the early 1900s, the hot springs became a popular place for vacations.
The Story of Arrowhead Water
In 1909, the Arrowhead Springs Company began. They started selling their water products in Southern California. The water traveled from Arrowhead Springs to Los Angeles. It was carried in special glass-lined train cars. In 1917, the company moved its bottling to a new factory in Los Angeles.
A big change happened in 1929. The Arrowhead Springs Company joined with a company called Puritas. Puritas water had been sold in Los Angeles since 1894. For many years, Arrowhead and Puritas waters were bottled together. They were also sold together. Sometimes bottles had only one name. But often, they were labeled "Arrowhead and Puritas." The Arrowhead Beverage Company bottled many drinks. These included seltzer, fruit sodas, and ginger ale.
Arrowhead water became the official drink for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932. This was a big moment for the company! Arrowhead water was chosen again for the Olympics in 1984. Those games were also held in Los Angeles. In 1993, Arrowhead water even bought the naming rights for a sports arena. It was called the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim.
The Nestlé Years
In 1987, a large company called Nestlé bought Arrowhead waters. After this, you could find Arrowhead water bottles in many more supermarkets. Its reach grew across the Western United States.
In 1996, the company introduced a new bottle size. By the early 2000s, they also started selling flavored waters. A well-known saying for the brand is It's Better Up Here!. In 2006, they released a special bottle called Aquapod. This was also under the Arrowhead brand.
Around 2015, there were questions about Nestlé's water use. People wondered if they had the right permits. In 2017, California water officials looked into it. They found that Nestlé might not have the proper rights. This was for much of the water they took from the San Bernardino National Forest. In 2021, California officials took action. They worked to stop Nestlé from taking water from the forest.
Later, in September 2023, California officials made a new order. They told the company to stop using most of the springs. These were springs they had used for a long time. Officials said the company did not have the water rights. They also said the water use was harming local wildlife.
BlueTriton Brands
In April 2021, Nestlé sold its bottled water business in the United States. It was bought by two companies, One Rock Capital Partners LLC and Metropoulos & Co. This new company changed its name to BlueTriton Brands. Its main office is in Stamford, Connecticut.
