The Story of Deer Park Water
Early Days and the Railroad Connection
After the American Civil War, a railroad company called the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) built a casino. This casino was near a special spring in Deer Park, Maryland. A man named Troy Gibson found this spring. The B&O Railroad also built the Deer Park Hotel and a spa there. They wanted people to ride their trains to this fun vacation spot. The spring water quickly became very popular. Even four American Presidents visited, from James Garfield to William Taft.
The "Boiling Spring" and Bottling Begins
Locally, people called the spring the "Boiling Spring." This was because the water seemed to bubble up through white sand. The B&O Railroad quickly saw how valuable this spring was. They started bottling the water in 1873. This was a long time ago!
In 1966, a company called Boiling Spring Holding Corporation bought the spring. They also bought the land around it from the B&O Railroad. They then became Deer Park Spring Water, Inc. The company was named after the nearby town of Deer Park, Maryland. This company mainly sold the bottled spring water in the metropolitan New York area.
Changing Hands and New Sources
Later, Deer Park Water Company was bought by The Clorox Company. They continued to sell the spring water under the Deer Park name. You could find it along most of the East Coast.
In 1993, Perrier Group of America Inc. bought Deer Park Spring Water, Inc. Perrier was a part of Nestlé S.A., a huge food company from Switzerland. Now, as part of Nestlé Waters, the water comes from many different places. These include springs in Florida, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, Maine, and South Carolina.
Famous Slogans and Bottle Designs
Many people remember Deer Park for its famous catchphrase from the 1980s. It was, "Deer PARK, that's good water!"
In 2006, Deer Park released a unique bottle design called the Aquapod. It looked very different from other water bottles. Then, in 2015, the company started using bottles that are BPA-Free. This means the bottles do not contain a chemical called BPA.
